The popularity of electric (EV) mopeds and mopeds has reached a new high. This is evident from figures from the RAI Association, BOVAG and data center RDC. In the first four months of 2022, the share of electric power in new sales of mopeds increased to 50,16 percent, compared to 30,8 percent in the same period in 2021. For mopeds, 43,5 percent of all new sales are now electrically powered. In total, the share of electric scooters (moped and light moped) is 46,7 percent this year, compared to 33,9 in the first four months of 2021.

The need for travelers to travel individually remains high. This is increasingly happening on an electric moped or moped. Over the whole of 2022, the share of electric in the new moped registrations was 50 percent (50,16 percent) for the first time, good for 5.216 units compared to 1.692 units in 2021. The share of electric in moped sales is 43,5 percent (4.495 units). .

BOVAG and the RAI Association are pleased that both consumers and entrepreneurs are increasingly choosing to travel quickly and without emissions over short and medium distances. According to the RAI Association and BOVAG, manufacturers have invested heavily in recent years in expanding the range of electric scooters. This has led to higher quality, greater range and lower price. It is difficult to say to what extent the increased fuel prices will affect EV sales, but according to the interest groups, it will certainly not hinder the transition.

Delay in making moped park sustainable
BOVAG and RAI Association warn that electrification is not self-evident. In absolute numbers, the number of electric mopeds sold fell by -24,8 percent. It is precisely here that the sector, together with the government, has great ambitions to only sell new electric mopeds by 2025. Due to the decline in sales, the electrification of the existing park of approximately 820.000 mopeds could be delayed.

Helmet requirement
The declining popularity of mopeds is largely due to the imminent national helmet requirement for mopeds. Politically there is agreement, but the implementation date is still not definitively fixed. The effect of the helmet requirement is also reflected in the proportion of mopeds compared to light mopeds. The number of mopeds and light mopeds sold is now almost the same. This hadn't happened since 2009. Over the whole of 2022, 49,6 percent of all registered scooters were mopeds, compared to 50,4 percent light moped. A year ago, this ratio in that period was still 76,1 percent light moped compared to 24,9 percent moped. According to the RAI Association and BOVAG, it is not self-evident that light mopeds now opt for a moped. Many moped users specifically opt for the lower maximum speed and the fact that you ride on the cycle path.

A slight decrease in total
In total, sales of scooters (mopeds and light mopeds) in the first four months were 7,8 percent lower than in the first four months of 2021, but with 20.968 units, 2022 is still the second best year since 2011. registrations in 2022 were 10.398 moped (+89 percent) and 10.570 (-39,6 percent), according to Royal RAI Association.
