The aim is to give drivers a better overview of the pedestrians.

As of today, Amsterdam has the first 'winged zebra crossing' in the Netherlands. This is a zebra crossing with an extra extension of the characteristic zebra stripes on both sides, making the zebra crossing more visible to car traffic. This ensures that motorists brake earlier, which contributes to road safety.

The winged zebra crossing is located on the bridge at Admiralengracht and the intersection with Jan Evertsenstraat. This is a busy intersection with a lot of traffic and school-age children, where a serious accident occurred in 2021. After an inspection by the Blackspots working group, the special crosswalk emerged as one of the possible improvements to the traffic situation. The winged zebra crossing is a pilot. If it is successful, it will be deployed at several locations in Amsterdam.

An ordinary zebra crossing is at least four meters long, a winged zebra crossing has been extended to about ten to twelve meters on both sides of the roadway. The intention is that drivers have a better overview of the pedestrians approaching or crossing the zebra crossing, so that they will stop earlier. In the coming months, the use of the winged zebra crossing will be monitored.

Alderman Egbert de Vries (Traffic and Transport, Water and Air Quality): “Road safety is my priority. I want a city where children can cycle or walk safely to school, where the elderly enjoy cycling and where people can get from A to B without any worries. To achieve this, road safety needs to be drastically improved and more measures are needed. We are working on this in many ways, for example with the recent measure to lower the maximum speed to 30 kilometers per hour.”
