They agree with the local government or OCMW how the bicycles will be made available to the refugees.

With the #bicyclefree campaign, Fietspunts and Fietsbiebs in Flanders, in collaboration with local authorities, donate bicycles to refugees and other vulnerable families who do not have access to an affordable means of transport. The employees of the Bicycle Points and Bicycle Biebs screen your bicycles. If your bicycle is still in good condition, they will completely fine-tune it or repair it if necessary.

If your bicycle can no longer be repaired, they will disassemble the bicycle and reuse the parts. Together with the local government or OCMW, they agree on how the bicycles will be made available to the refugees. It is not possible to give the bicycle only to refugees from Ukraine. Your old bicycle always helps someone, because the Fietspunts and Fietsbiebs are committed to making the bicycles permanently available to other vulnerable families and children.

De overview page van Fietsberaad bundles all useful information for local authorities about the #fietsvrij campaign. You will find more information about the functioning of Fietspunts and cycling schools, interesting articles about encouraging the use of bicycles among refugees and an example case for cooperation between the City of Leuven and Fietspunt Velo.

which bikes are you talking about?

The refugees are mainly women and children, so they need women's and children's bicycles. They have a stock of second-hand women's bicycles that we normal rent to students. They can draw on that. Children's bicycles are a bigger problem. Do you also call on the residents of your municipality/city to give an old bicycle a new life? on bicyclefree.be you can read all about this promotion and discover what happens to the bicycles and where you can go.
