The crowds at Schiphol ensure that travelers have local airports higher on their wish list. Since the start of the May holiday, there has been considerably more search for flights from Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Eelde and the German airports. Dé VakantieDiscounter has seen an increase in the number of searches for holidays from specific airports in recent weeks. It is striking that Schiphol – since the start of the crowds and media attention – has lagged behind compared to other airports.

Biggest increase for Rotterdam

Rotterdam comes out as the big 'winner'. The number of searches for flights from this airport has increased by a whopping 52%. The other Dutch airports are also on the rise; Eelde increases by 32% and Eindhoven by 30%. The German airports are also gaining share; 37%. Schiphol has to make do with only one growth

Damage limited on bookings

Although these figures are significant, the VakantieDiscounter does not yet see this as significant in the booking figures. “We see that travelers search a lot at local airports, but there are more decision factors than just the crowds at Schiphol. Whether they ultimately book a holiday with a trip from the desired airport also depends on the choice of destination, availability and not entirely unimportant; the prize”, says Laura Vlaanderen of the VakantieDiscounter.

Yet it looks online travel agency however, that the number of bookings from Schiphol is decreasing; where in week 16 44% booked a holiday with departure from Schiphol, this has dropped to 40% in recent days. These people seem to mainly move to Rotterdam; the share of this airport increases from 6 to 10%.
