"I am convinced that we have a bright future with MaaS."

MaaS is about planning, booking and paying for all possible transport via apps. For example, the shared bicycle, car, scooter, train, tram, or taxi over the road or water. In the Netherlands, the national government, regional governments and market parties are fully experimenting with MaaS. A success story may therefore not end with a pilot, but a national roll-out is possible. The future of MaaS and the shape of the operating model remain uncertain.

expiring pilots

The national pilots will end at the end of 2022 and are currently being evaluated. MaaS is in line with a development that is already underway: the younger consumer in particular considers possession, such as their own car, less important. There were 7 national pilots. rolled out. Each pilot has a different focus on a policy goal or target group. In the development of MaaS, the government has taken on a role as an active intermediary. This was important for standardization, security and privacy.

Whether it concerns - Rotterdam-The Hague - the Zuidas (Amsterdam) - Utrecht Leidsche Rijn, Vleuten and De Meern - the municipality of Eindhoven, ASML, Brainport Smart Mobility - Twente - Limburg or Groningen-Drenthe, the application of MaaS is not easy at this point. In addition, the success of MaaS is also highly dependent on the behavior and perception of the ultimate user.

TOMP API standard

Governments are laying the foundation for MaaS. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management developed from the seven national MaaS pilots with different regions. In addition, it ensured that we TOMP API have become a frontrunner in Europe. The Ministry has taken the lead in developing the Transport Operator Mobility-as-a-service Provider (TOMP). This system unlocks the data of various mobility providers for the traveler within one app.

MaaS platforms still face the challenge of reaching the public masses.

tech giants

The pilots weren't cheap specific arrangement for laundry. Simultaneously with the decision to grant the benefit, the Minister granted an advance of 100% of the specific benefit. MaaS makes it possible to meet the transportation challenges of travelers and regions, and can create significant business opportunities for industry players. Not only mobility companies, but also insurers and ICT companies.

Within Europe, the Meuse ecosystem is not just a Google or Uber affair. But because these tech giants almost never have money problems, it can become difficult for many local market parties to actively continue with MaaS developments when the government puts the financial resources on the back burner.

Despite the enthusiasm of cities and companies in the sector, there are still challenges such as bringing together different mobility services, standardizing data and interfaces, offering real-time services and, last but not least, finding a profitable business model. MaaS platforms still face the challenge of reaching the public masses. Despite the challenges mentioned in this article, I am convinced that MaaS has a bright future.

origin

The concept of MaaS has become known in Finland. 'Whim', a Finnish MaaS app, was rolled out in Helsinki at the end of 2017 and already had more than 2018 users in 70.000. While the app is available in multiple countries, nowhere is the MaaS rollout as advanced as in Finland. Within the Netherlands 9292 moves, which is separate from the regular 9292 app, is currently an interesting player in MaaS development. You can even book a Check scooter easily via this app. 9292 also uses the TOMP API standard to implement the features.
