A price decrease in the coming years is in line with expectations.

A home battery is not financially profitable, according to consumer organization Test Aankoop and is confirmed by several experts. Interest in home batteries is growing among those who have solar panels. Because that way you can use more of your own electricity. This is not unimportant when the advantage of the reverse counter diminishes or even disappears completely. Thanks to a battery, you can temporarily store the electricity generated by your solar panels, which you do not use immediately, at your home instead of sending it to the grid.

Even with a premium such as in Flanders, an investment in a home battery will rarely be profitable. After all, you have to be able to aim for a profitability in barely 10 years. In a random sample, the price was found to increase on average to €850 per kWh for an existing installation of solar panels, and even to €1 for a new installation. A price decrease in the coming years is in line with expectations. Scarce raw materials are required for the production of a home battery. There are also alternative storage systems. Finally, there are cheaper alternatives to boost your self-consumption.

reverse counter

In Flanders, a ruling by the Constitutional Court has put an end to the reversing counter for those who have solar panels and a digital meter. Anyone who will later receive such a digital meter will also have this system overhauled. For the electricity you put into the grid, you will then receive a feed-in compensation from your energy supplier, which, however, will be lower than the purchase rate. In Brussels, the counter has not been rolled back since November 2021. In the Walloon region, you can opt for partial compensation, in which case the prosumer rate will disappear. But if you would be worse off with this than with the standard scheme with full compensation and the prosumer rate, you can always fall back on the most financially advantageous option.

According to the findings from Testaankoop you should not think that you can store your excess power in the summer and then use it in the winter. The storage in a home battery will last you a day or a few days at most.
