On Saturday September 10th exists Eindhoven Airport ninety years and that is what Eindhoven Airport, Eindhoven Air Base and the Eindhoven Aeroclub Motorvliegen will celebrate with a number of fun promotions and activities. Passengers, local residents, partners and staff are treated to a number of special events. A milestone they like to dwell on.

Various activities are planned during the festive year. From, for example, a drawing competition for children to a VIP reception for passengers and an exhibition for the neighbours.

Airport Wellbeing

The airport has a rich history. The airport received many special guests and connects the region with many countries. In addition to military and civilian traffic, the airport is also available for recreational air traffic from the Aero Club. The airport thus continues to serve the region of which it is a part.

Roel Hellemons, CEO of Eindhoven Airport, tells us that 90 years ago, entrepreneur Anton Philips, the municipality of Eindhoven and Albert Plesman, CEO of KLM, stood at the cradle of the establishment of Eindhoven Airport. The need to connect Eindhoven as one of the most important cities in the country with other cities was the main reason for this.

The airport has now built up a rich history as a home base for civil, military and recreational/sports traffic. The airport has come of age. Meeting the need to connect Eindhoven and the surrounding region with other countries, cities and areas was, is and remains the starting point. Hellemons and all stakeholders are proud of the airport and look forward to the future in which the region, sustainability and connection are central.

Herman de Vries, chairman of the Eindhoven Aero Club Motorvliegen, adds that on September 28, 1932, a new motor flying club was founded at Welschap airport, the North Brabant Aeroclub. In the years that followed, they were able to experience the growth of the airport as a flying club and they made the transition to the Eindhoven Aeroclub Motorvliegen that the club is now. As a flying club they offer the region the opportunity to get acquainted with recreational flying in an accessible way. They are proud that as a flying club they have been co-users of Eindhoven Air Base since 1932 and that many enthusiastic pilots have been able to realize their dream of becoming a pilot.

Colonel Jorrit de Gruijter, commander of Eindhoven Air Base, argues that 90 years ago the importance of an airport for the development of a region was already recognized. With the words 'The south will be released from its isolation' the airport was opened in 1932. What started with a modest number of aircraft has grown into the second largest airport in the Netherlands.

Eindhoven Airport is a military airport with Eindhoven Airport as the largest civilian co-user. They can rightly conclude 90 years later that the south has been lifted out of its isolation and the region has developed. The airbase has its place in it. From Eindhoven Air Base they transport soldiers and cargo to mission areas. And they provide aid to areas where the need is greatest, worldwide. In addition, they are responsible for opening the airport for military and civil air traffic.
