After the embellishment of the tunnel mouths between stations Lemonnier and Zuidstation, from Vrijheidslaan and Jettelaan to Simonis and Reyerslaan to Meiser, Brussels Mobility, the City of Brussels and STIB asked artists a few months ago to think about a new project. This time it concerns the embellishment of the ceiling above the escalator that leads to the Rogier metro station, on the corner of the Kruidtuinlaan and the Nieuwstraat, for access to the City 2 shopping center. Based on the 22 applications received, 5 projects were shortlisted. and they are now being put to the public's vote! You can vote from August 29 to September 4 (midnight).

"What wonderful projects by these artists to make our city even more beautiful, more vibrant and colorful. It's up to you to choose your favorite work! The public space is much more than a place you just walk by, and these murals make them more inviting ."

These are the 5 selected proposals

PROJECT 1 – ELISA SARTORI & ALMUDENA PANO of the COLLECTIF 10eme ARTE

This artist duo proposes to open this passageway and color it with a
fresco that refers to a landscape between the sea and the mountains. The drawing begins with more angular shapes representing mountains and hills, which gradually change into rectangles suggesting plains and fields. In the lower part of the drawing they have depicted the sea and its reflections in a very simplified way. “What counts is the play of shapes, the color, the imaginary shapes that everyone can interpret according to their own sensitivity”.

PROJECT 2 – CAROLINE, FELIX ET DENIS of the non-profit organization FAIS LE TROTTOIR

The trio of artists focused their research on abstract air and floating forms. she
were inspired by the representation of ocean currents and their variations in time and space. Since the distance between the fresco and the escalator is not very large, they use light shapes and soft colors so that the composition does not become overwhelming for the users of the escalator.

PROJECT 3 – DAKE 25

This project is called “Underground Journey”. The fresco invites you to travel through a color gradient through a color gradient inspired by the color variations of the sky, from dawn (at the top of the escalator) to dusk (at the bottom of the escalator), and in the amid the starry sky and the moonlight of the darkness of the night. This "magic sky", which gives the effect of traveling through a whole day in a handful of seconds, a small metaphor of today's life.

PROJECT 4 – GASPARD RYELANDT & MARIE MAHLER

Using the vertical aspect of the available format, the artists highlight the transition from outside to inside, the transition from north to south through a decor of shapes and symbols that are revealed as the traveler progresses. The figurative motifs are graphically treated in a deliberately minimalistic way, working with the idea of the motif or the wallpaper. “We chose to portray an iris (symbol of our city) in the foreground, from the flower to the roots that refer to a network. In the background, a graphic landscape develops with shapes of the Atomium, city lights and then metro trains”.

PROJECT 5 – LINDERT SEETEN

The artist conceived his project in symbiosis with and as a complement to the majestic canopy of Place Rogier: his drawing is a visualization of the square seen from above, translated into its abstract and particularly colorful universe. “It is an exercise in thinking about what the square looks like from above, but also what goes on below. When you translate this into a 2D plane with the retention of depth and a play between the color planes, you arrive at this design.”
