By order of the Public Prosecution Service, a speed camera was installed at the end of August 2022 on the MA Reinaldaweg (N210) in Lopik at the intersection Graaf with Lopikerweg Oost. Road users who drive there too fast or ignore the red light will soon risk a traffic fine. The speed camera was placed at the request of the province of Utrecht and with a positive advice from the police after complaints from local residents about road safety. The pole is located along a part of the provincial road N210 with a relatively high amount of traffic and crossing cyclists and pedestrians on both sides of the Graaf intersection. A speed camera can have a positive effect on road safety here.

Facts and numbers

Recent samples from the province of Utrecht confirm complaints from local residents about motorists who drive too fast and also regularly run red lights. Because this occurs too often, the province has submitted an application to the Public Prosecution Service to install a speed camera. Since 2018, the province of Utrecht has registered three collisions at this intersection, two of which resulted in injuries.

Set up and test

After the speed camera has been set up and tested, it will be put into operation as soon as possible. It is expected that the moment of commissioning will be no later than the end of September 2022. The speed camera will be enforced in both lanes in the Nieuwegein direction. The Public Prosecution Service has opted for this setting because people drive too fast and run red lights in this direction of travel. Moreover, many cyclists cross the road here. Route study intersection Graaf-N204

The speed camera is a measure that can improve road safety in the short term. To ensure a more structural improvement of road safety, quality of life and traffic flow at and around the Graaf intersection, the province of Utrecht in the autumn of 2022 with a trajectory study. The study should lead to improvement measures for the long term, up to 2040. The province is looking at the section of the MA Reinaldaweg between the Graaf intersection and the connection to the N204 towards Woerden. This is the part of the provincial road with the most bottlenecks. The province will carry out this trajectory study together with residents and entrepreneurs in the immediate vicinity. The municipality of Lopik is also actively involved in this.
