The Limburg company VDL NedCar sees the deal between Rivian and Mercedes as a positive signal that Rivian is actually expanding in Europe. A spokesperson late on NRC know Mercedes' announcement does not threaten a possible partnership with Rivian. The VDL NedCar factory is set up to make passenger cars and not to produce delivery vans.

Subject to entering into a final binding agreement between the parties and obtaining the relevant regulatory approvals, the companies intend to establish a new manufacturing company in a joint venture for the purpose of operating a plant in Europe for the production of large electric vans for both Mercedes-Benz ‑Benz Vans and Rivian.
