Rob Jetten, Minister for Climate and Energy, recently presented the prize of the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN Award) to Stedin Netbeheer. The Smart Solar Charging project won first prize. This project integrates electric vehicles into a smart energy system by deploying them in the neighborhood as a 'battery on wheels'. The ISGAN Award is presented annually to innovative projects, policies and programs worldwide that make electricity grids smarter, cleaner and more flexible.

Smartly responding to the supply of sustainable energy

Electric vehicles have a high power and are at a charging station for a long time. This allows them to keep the electricity grid stable and make it greener. The Smart Solar Charging project responds to the peaks in the supply of sustainable energy:

  • Owners of electric cars are encouraged to charge their car at low energy prices (a lot of energy is then available);
  • Is the energy price high? Then the energy is released to the district again. Electric vehicles are, as it were, used as 'battery on wheels'.

“In this way we avoid peaks on the electricity grid, which is becoming increasingly crowded. And we keep a sustainable energy system affordable”.

Further development with chain partners

The Smart Solar Charging project has received a subsidy through the Top Sectors scheme TSE: Urban Energy. The project has been completed and Stedin now wants to further develop and roll out this solution with all chain partners Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
