With this they are taking an important step in achieving their ambition to be able to mix 2030% SAF worldwide by 10.

Air France-KLM recently announced two major, multi-year purchase agreements, purchasing a total of 1,6 million tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). These are binding, multi-year contracts with SAF providers Neste and DG Fuels. With this they are taking an important step in achieving their ambition to be able to mix 2030% SAF worldwide by 10. With these two contracts, they now cover a third of that need until 2030. The first deliveries are expected in 2023.

“KLM has strong ambitions when it comes to making aviation more sustainable and balancing the development of our network with local residents and the surrounding area. This requires major and fundamental decisions such as renewing our fleet, electrifying the ground equipment and scaling up the use of SAF. We need partners who, like us, are committed to a more sustainable future of flying. KLM has been taking action for years to further open up the market for more sustainable fuel. Today, with Neste and DG Fuels, we are taking another important step in the further reduction of our CO2 emissions.”

Commitment to various alternative fuels

In addition to reducing fuel consumption, SAF as a 'drop-in fuel' is a solution to reduce CO2 emissions in aviation in the short to medium term, without the need for adjustments to infrastructure or equipment. It has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in its pure form by an average of 80% (compared to fossil fuels), depending on the combination of technology and raw material chosen, and as long as strict sustainability criteria are met. Air France-KLM has a strict sourcing policy in which it commits to purchase only sustainable fuels that do not compete with the production and supply of food for humans or animals, that are RSB or ISCC+ certified and that are not produced on based on palm oil.

SAF is not yet widely available. In order to become more sustainable in the future, KLM is focusing on scaling up the production and use of SAF. For more SAF, KLM is working with various parties to research and develop all possible technologies and to stimulate the upscaling of production facilities. airline.
