The mayor of Utrecht, Sharon Dijksma, has been nominated as a candidate for the presidency of the VNG from June 2023 for a term of 4 years. Until then, Dijksma will be vice-chairman from the beginning of December to the end of June. During the GMM on 2 December, her candidacy will be presented to the members. In the opinion of the Nomination Committee, Dijksma fits perfectly in the requested profile.
"She is a recognizable figurehead, a connector and, thanks to her administrative network and political contacts, she is able to achieve visible results that are important for the large and small municipalities within the association. Furthermore, because of her previous positions as a member of parliament, state secretary, alderman and now mayor of Utrecht has a good sense of changing administrative and social relationships and the challenges that municipalities face."

In a first reaction, Sharon Dijksma says that she is 'very proud and grateful' for the confidence placed in her by the Nomination Committee. Dijksma: “It is an honor to become chairman of this important organization next year and to be able to start as vice-chairman in December. It is great to be able to work with the current chairman on the plan for the coming years, a strategy for now and the years up to 2030. As far as I am concerned, we as municipalities take a step forward more often on topics where this is possible. we are a solid discussion partner who operates self-consciously and from our own strength, as a representative of all members. The Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) connects all municipalities in the Netherlands and the overseas territories. In addition to all municipalities in the Netherlands, the regions of Aruba and Curaçao and the special municipalities of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius also belong to the association. VNG is working on a strong local government. They do this by setting the agenda for issues and developments relevant to municipalities, and by putting local implementation at the center of social tasks.
