Waste transport from the Netherlands to Indaver can then no longer take place.

As a precautionary measure, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) no longer issues permits for transports with PFAS-containing waste that is intended for processing at the Belgian waste processor Indaver. Previously issued EVOA notifications (European Waste Shipment Regulation) are also withdrawn by the ILT. Waste transport from the Netherlands to Indaver can then no longer take place.

The ILT comes to this decision after it has received various signals from the field. After additional investigation, the ILT is not convinced that the PFAS-containing material is processed correctly and efficiently at the Belgian waste processor. If PFAS-containing material is not processed correctly, it can pose risks to people and the environment. That is why, as a precautionary measure, the ILT has taken the decision to no longer have PFAS-containing waste exported to Indaver for processing.

Correct waste handling

The ILT has today informed the companies that have issued a permit for waste transport with PFAS to Belgium. They have received a letter with the intention to revoke the permit and can object to this. The ILT will also reject applications for new permits until it has once again been sufficiently demonstrated that the processing is correct and efficient.

As waste producers, the companies involved are responsible for finding an alternative processor and/or for the safe storage of this waste. It is up to the companies to demonstrate correct and efficient waste processing. Only after receiving additional information will the ILT reconsider the decisions.
