The latest edition of 'Mobility in Figures Cars', an annual publication by BOVAG and RAI Association, shows that the Dutch vehicle fleet is getting older. On 1 January 2022, for the first time, there were more than 5 million passenger cars of 10 years or older (year of construction 2012 or older) in the Netherlands; 5.005.615 to be exact. That is a share of 55 percent. Seven years earlier, there were just over 4 million (4.040.420) cars aged 10 and older, which was less than half (49 percent) of the total fleet at the time.

'Mobility in Figures Cars' offers a detailed insight into registrations, ownership and use of passenger and commercial vehicles, historical developments, maintenance and the economic and fiscal significance of these means of transport. In addition, this publication charts government policy, environmental developments, traffic congestion and international figures on the production and registration of passenger cars.

Automatic on the rise
This year's version also states that the number of diesel passenger cars in 2022 will be below 1 million and the number of LPG cars below 100.000. Since 2018, on the other hand, the fully electrically powered fleet has increased tenfold, to more than 250.000 cars on January 1, 2022.

Mobility in Numbers also shows that at the beginning of this year almost 2,7 million passenger cars had an automatic gearbox, or 29 percent of the vehicle fleet. That is more than 800.000 more than on January 1, 2017; at the time, the share of the automatic gearbox was still 21 percent. Last year, more than 6 out of 10 new passenger cars were equipped with an automatic gearbox, while 5 years earlier this was only 3 out of 10.
