DAF Components supplies two PACCAR MX-11 engines for GVB Amsterdam's IJveer 56. The power units have been selected by the municipal transport company for their low NOx emissions, low fuel consumption and long service intervals. They can also easily handle new, alternative fuels such as GTL and HVO, which helps to further reduce the CO2 footprint of the springs.

The power units supplied by DAF are 'marinised' versions of the latest generation of Euro 6 PACCAR MX-11 engines in collaboration with NPS/Vink Diesel. Among other things, the cooling has been adapted so that the engines can also function optimally in a (usually hot) ship's hold.

The PACCAR power sources are placed by Talsma Shipyard Franeker in the large, semi-covered 'IJveer 56'. Upon successful commissioning, DAF Components will probably be commissioned to provide another six IJveren with MX-11 engines.

“Our engines are considerably cleaner than the strictest emission requirements of inland shipping; the Stage V IWW guideline. The engines are designed to deliver maximum performance at very low revs. This ensures both low fuel consumption and extra passenger comfort; the motors are also low-vibration and low-noise. The PACCAR engines are a unique, sustainable solution for virtually all inland shipping: clean, economical and comfortable.”

5 million passengers

For many Amsterdammers, the freely accessible ferries are an indispensable link between the north and the south of their city. That is why the ships sail from early in the morning until late at night – and sometimes even day and night. All IJveren together transfer some 5 million passengers annually between Amsterdam-North and Amsterdam-South.

Maximum deployability

Since Amsterdam's public transport relies heavily on the IJveren, it is crucial that the ferries are in operation as much as possible. And the PACCAR-MX-11 engine sets the standard in that area too. While a service interval of 500 to 600 operating hours is the norm for these types of engines, the DAF power source only needs to be serviced every 2.000 operating hours. This contributes to maximum employability.

PACCAR engines for Port of Amsterdam

The two PACCAR engines are not the first power sources to be installed in vessels of the Amsterdam local government. DAF Components previously supplied PACCAR MX engines for vessels of The Port of Amsterdam (one vessel with two MX-13 engines) and Waternet (three electric-hybrid vessels with one MX-11 engine each).
