Rijkswaterstaat reports that almost every week last year one barrier at a bridge or lock fell due to the inattention of pedestrians, motorists or waterway users.

The Netherlands is a water-rich country and therefore has many ditches, canals, canals, streams and rivers. The bridges in the Netherlands play an important role in the main road network in the Netherlands and they ensure that we in the Netherlands are connected to each other. Rijkswaterstaat manages a total of 1143 different bridges and takes care of their maintenance. Rijkswaterstaat operators are at work everywhere in our country. Every day, these people ensure a safe and good flow through the weir, lock or under the bridge. They operate the locks and bridges in our country using cameras and smart digital systems. This goes on day and night. About 440 operators work at Rijkswaterstaat.

“It's about everyone's safety. You don't normally see us. But I also operate the lock or bridge for your safety. I have control over the whole process, except whether you decide to stop before the barrier or accelerate quickly. You freak out when something like this happens. You have followed everything according to the correct processes and yet you see things go wrong. You then make it incredibly unsafe for all parties involved. And not only that, it also entails the necessary costs. I have the best job in the Netherlands and I am proud to work on a bit of extra safety. I do everything for that. That is why I also want to encourage people to wait that extra minute. Enjoy the beautiful view. I do that as well".

Rijkswaterstaat reports that almost every week last year one barrier at a bridge or lock fell due to the inattention of pedestrians, motorists or waterway users. Last year, 51 barriers were deployed on bridges and locks. That one motorist who quickly accelerates because he thinks he will just make it before the bridge opens. Or that scooter rider who bends under it himself while his buddy who sat on the back got stuck behind the barrier. These kinds of scenes make sure that Rijkswaterstaat calls on road users and waterway users to be extra attentive at bridges and locks. Together we can ensure more safety at bridges and locks.
