There is a subsidy of 60 million euros for construction companies to switch to such machines, such as electric cranes, hydrogen-powered concrete mixers and battery-powered excavators. Such construction equipment does not emit any exhaust gases, and therefore no nitrogen. State Secretary Heijnen will publish her decision today in the Government Gazette. There will also be more subsidy options for entrepreneurs who want to drive a truck without exhaust fumes.

“We all know that nitrogen is a problem, also for the construction industry. With emission-free machines, we are increasingly solving this problem. I know that the construction industry wants it, because last year the subsidy pot was empty within one day. That's why I'm putting in a lot more next year, because I really want to make progress with the sector. On the way to a busy construction site, but without nitrogen and exhaust fumes”.

Solutions against nitrogen

The ruling of the Council of State on Porthos has emphasized the need to build more sustainably. The sector wants it, and so does the government. That is why builders can receive a subsidy when purchasing a clean construction machine, or for the conversion of a polluting construction machine into a clean one. There are also subsidy options for the installation of catalytic converters, which collect many polluted substances so that they do not end up in the air.

Next year, the cabinet will allocate considerably more money for emission-free machines in the construction industry.

The subsidy is necessary because construction equipment that runs on hydrogen or batteries is often much more expensive than equipment that runs on diesel. Builders can be reimbursed up to 40% of the price difference with diesel with the subsidy. This percentage is higher for smaller entrepreneurs than for larger entrepreneurs, in order to help SMEs make the switch. Nitrogen-free equipment has the future for the construction industry so that it can continue to build. After all, if you don't use a nitrogen room, you don't have to look for one. In response to the Porthos ruling, the cabinet has decided to allocate an extra €400 million for clean and emission-free construction.

Also a helping hand with the purchase of a truck

Entrepreneurs can also receive support when purchasing an emission-free truck. In 2023, a total of 30 million will be available for this, as it has become known today. That is 5 million euros more than last year, according to the National government
