As of 1 January, more than € 22 million will be available to encourage transporters to transport their goods by water or rail. Transporters can charge an amount of € 20 per container (or equivalent in bulk) moved request. This means fewer trucks on the road, safer roads and cleaner air.

modal shift

The Netherlands has permission from the European Commission to invest 22,5 million euros in a modal shift of freight transport. The money is intended to encourage transporters to transport their goods via inland waterways and rail instead of road. This is good for the reduction of traffic on the road, road safety and the reduction of CO2emissions.

In addition to relieving road congestion and reducing traffic congestion, the transport of goods by water and rail instead of road is also important because of Rijkswaterstaat's large-scale replacement and renovation task. As a result, the pressure on the road network is increasing considerably. Rijkswaterstaat will replace or renovate more than 100 bridges, tunnels, locks and viaducts in the coming years. With more than a thousand fewer trucks on the road every day, the pressure on the road network is decreasing and road safety is increasing.
