Vanderlande is responsible for both the design and construction of the baggage handling system.

They handle luggage at almost all major airports, top companies such as Amazon, FedEx and Albert Heijn are customers. The Brabant company Vanderlande has been commissioned by Schiphol to develop a new system for baggage handling. According to the FD, a so-called framework agreement closed for the yet to be built luggage cellar. The new system should ease the physically demanding work of handlers.

Schiphol transports more than 50 million pieces of luggage annually, over more than 30 kilometers of transport system. Since 2010, 110 meters of circularly designed blue belts have been installed at Schiphol. These blue conveyor belts are a good example of innovation, because two companies have joined forces. Vanderlande designed a 'cradle-to-cradle' baggage belt that also uses less energy and Schiphol supplied the test environment.

The baggage basement will be located in the same place where a possible new terminal will be built. When the new baggage handling system is being installed, old baggage systems that have a lifespan of about thirty years will also be replaced by new ones. The newspaper FD had previously found a message on tendering platform Tenderned with a so-called market consultation, in which Schiphol itself reports that it is working on the tender for a new terminal. According to the newspaper, construction could start in 2026.

Vanderlande has grown in baggage handling, but the company is also one of the market leaders in automation for parcel services. UPS, FedEx, DHL and PostNL are close by, just like the web giants Zalando and Amazon. Founder Eddie van der Lande started his machine factory in 1949. In 1963 a joint venture with the American company Rapistan follows. In 1988, Vanderlande returned to Dutch hands after a management buy-out. Vanderlande in Veghel was acquired in 2017 for €1,2 billion by machine manufacturer Toyota Industries from Japan.

Schiphol Airport

Schiphol now has three terminals and the construction of a fourth terminal has been planned for years, but demand for air transport fell dramatically during the pandemic and the airport postponed construction plans. In recent months, the airport has been the scene of months of chaos, because the management had not recruited enough staff for the security check.
