In the context of the European subsidy to remove level crossings from the tracks, the municipalities of Dijk en Waard, Alkmaar, Zaanstad and the Amsterdam Transport Region have signed a cooperation agreement. The collaboration is the start of the realization of various rail projects between Heerhugowaard and Amsterdam.

In October 2022, the municipalities were awarded an EU grant for the preparation of the work on the railway tunnels. As part of the Green Deal, the European Union wants to run more trains for passengers and to reduce CO2 emissions.

Assembly

In total, the three municipalities will receive a maximum of €3,4 million to prepare the tunnels. This is therefore not yet money for the realization of the railway underpasses. The municipality of Dijk en Waard is now the first of the cooperating partners to also apply for an EU subsidy for the construction of the Zuidtangent railway underpass and for a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel at Stationsweg. Whether this will be awarded from Europe will be known in mid-2023.

High-frequency track

The Dutch government also wants to run more trains on the track and has developed the 'High-frequency Rail' program for this purpose. On the route from Heerhugowaard (Dijk en Waard) to Amsterdam (part of the Zaan Corridor), tunnels will be constructed under the railway at three locations. In this way, trains can run faster on this route and in a higher frequency. Cyclists and motorists also benefit, because they do not have to wait in front of the railway barriers. This promotes the flow of traffic.

Partnerships

The tunnel in Alkmaar will be located at the Helderseweg level crossing, the tunnel in Dijk en Waard will be located at the Zuidtangent level crossing in Heerhugowaard and the tunnel in Zaanstad will be located at Guisweg. For the purpose of cooperation in this project, the aldermen Nils Langedijk (Dijk en Waard), Robert te Beest (Alkmaar), Gerard Slegers (Zaanstad) and Melanie van der Horst (director of the Amsterdam Transport Region) have signed a cooperation agreement, according to Transport region Amsterdam.
