From 1 January 2024, the coaches will therefore no longer be allowed to enter the city and they will only be allowed to drive to the edge of Amsterdam, outside the S100 central ring road.

The municipality of Amsterdam reports that from January 1, 2024, heavy coaches from 7,5 tons are no longer welcome within the ring road around the center of Amsterdam. The heavy coaches cause a lot of inconvenience to the residents of Amsterdam. Among other things, the coaches cause unsafe traffic situations for cyclists and pedestrians and congestion in narrow streets. This is much to the chagrin of local residents. The weight of the heavy coaches is also not good for the many quays and bridges in the city. And while waiting for the passengers, they also emit a lot of harmful gases with their engines running.

"Courses are useful for transporting school classes or the elderly to cultural places in the city, for example. But 300 to 450 coaches a day are too many for the center, where there is little space. We will put an end to that from next year .”

nuisance

Residents experience nuisance from the heavy coaches. According to the city of Amsterdam, they cause congestion in narrow streets and make traffic less safe for cyclists and pedestrians. They are also too heavy for the quays and bridges, and they emit a lot of harmful gases when they are waiting for their passengers with their engines running. That is why heavy coaches are no longer allowed to enter the center. They must stay outside the center ring S100. Amsterdam is going to work with extra boarding and alighting places. They also improve existing places. For example, there will be an extra entry and exit point on De Ruijterkade East. In addition, they are working on good parking spaces at stations, from where visitors can go to the center by public transport.

exceptions

An exception will be made for the Weesperstraat, Valkenburgerstraat and Kattenburgerstraat. Many cultural organizations are located here, such as the Nemo, the Jewish Historical Museum, the Hermitage and the Jewish Portuguese Synagogue. Large coaches that drive primary school students, the elderly, people with a disability or artists to certain (art, educational or cultural) locations can apply for an exemption.
