More than 4200 people have died in major earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Usar has been requested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to start a search and rescue mission in the earthquake zone in Turkey and support international coordination and provide comfort and support to the residents. This humanitarian mission, under the EU flag, is not intended for Syria, but for Turkey. If a disaster occurs somewhere in the world, USAR.NL is alerted via the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System of the United Nations and the European Commission. The National Crisis Center (NCC) in the Netherlands has also issued a warning. Depending on the incident and the contribution that USAR.NL can make, preparations for a deployment abroad will start.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation decides whether USAR.NL will actually be deployed. Aid is being sent from several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Israel and the Netherlands.
