The question of which means of transport, for example, is faster, cheaper or has the least CO2 emissions can now be easily answered with the Travel Comparator.

Which means of transport do you choose today, the car, public transport or rather the bicycle? This is a personal choice for everyone. One is a sporty type and likes to cycle to the destination, the other likes the convenience of a car and another hates being in traffic jams and wants to do something about CO2 emissions and prefers to go with public transport. The question of which means of transport, for example, is faster, cheaper or has the least CO2 emissions can now easily be answered with the Travel Comparator of the Dutch Railways.

“We want to give travelers more insight into CO2 emissions and be transparent about the price. Depending on your trip, sometimes the car is cheaper and the other time the train. For a return trip from Utrecht center to Eindhoven center, for example, you see that the train is 4,50 euros cheaper and faster and has much lower CO2 emissions than the car. But if you look at a return trip from Utrecht center to Lisse, you see that the CO2 emissions for the train are the lowest, but that the car is 4 euros cheaper and slightly faster.”

"What many people do not yet know is that the CO2 profit is very large if you take the train instead of the car. The Travel Comparator provides insight into this climate profit. It is a great tool to raise awareness of the climate impact of a trip at to increase passengers. The CO2 emissions have been calculated by Milieu Centraal per passenger kilometer. The emissions from the generation of electricity for the train and the production and combustion of the fuel for the car have been included in this. For electric trains, we also include the emissions for the "The production and installation of wind turbines are included in the calculation. Those wind turbines provide the electricity for the train. Even if you take this into account, you save a lot of CO2 by taking the train."

With the Travel Comparator you can compare all means of transport on price, CO2 emissions and travel time. The information about costs for traveling by car is provided by the National Institute for Budget Information (NIBUD) and the CO2 emission figures are provided by the information organization Milieu Centraal. The Travel Comparator uses information from, among others, 9292, NS, Milieu Centraal and Nibud. You enter the departure and arrival location in the Travel Comparator and you immediately see the price, travel time and CO2 emissions of the selected trip. Also gives NS information about expected traffic jams and costs for parking.

“No one wants to pay too much when purchasing and people often spend hours searching for the cheapest product. It is good that there is now also a tool for travel that allows people to get a better idea of the price of the journey, so that they can take these costs into account when choosing which mode of transport is most suitable for them. The price is based on the variable costs of a compact class petrol car less than 10 years old and driving approximately 10.000 kilometers per year. Variable costs include fuel, maintenance, repairs and depreciation. We calculate with a petrol car because 80% of motorists in the Netherlands drive a petrol car. The compact class includes cars such as VW Polo, Audi A1 and a Ford Fiesta.”
