There are currently 27 vacancies to ensure that everyone can get from A to B safely.

From an accident in the evening rush hour to crowds around an event or a slippery road surface after a truck overturned. The road inspector goes over and steers everything in the right direction. A challenging function in which no day is the same. Do you think you have what it takes to be a road inspector for Rijkswaterstaat? You can, because there are vacancies and you can also become a road inspector. Relevant work experience is not a requirement, but it is important that you can properly motivate why you want it and what your image of the role is. Affinity with traffic and safety is of course an advantage.

training and tasks

You can only follow the training as a road inspector at Rijkswaterstaat and it starts on your 1st working day. As a road inspector you have a wide range of tasks. You take safety measures and inform road users if you notice that a dangerous situation arises somewhere. But you also receive notifications via the traffic center, for example if an accident has occurred. You set off with your yellow pick-up and are often the first on the scene. You clear the road, arrange the recovery of vehicles and divert traffic. More and more road inspectors also have the role of special investigating officer (BOA). They are authorized to intervene in the event of two common offences: ignoring red crosses above the road and parking on the hard shoulder.

The duration of the training is approximately one year, depending on the knowledge you already have and how quickly you pick up theory and practice. The road inspector training is partly on-the-job and partly theory. You will be linked to one or more mentors. You go out with them and on the basis of a workbook you carry out more and more tasks. From riding along and observing to increasingly performing tasks independently. The mentor will also ride with you until you can get started independently.

Something unexpected can always happen, for example: storm, a protest, escorting an emergency transport of an ambulance, pursuit by the police.

The bow is not always tense. It may happen that nothing happens on the road. During these quiet moments you are busy with (administrative) processing of e-mail, possibly entering observations and damage, maintaining your knowledge (including e-learnings), going through the protocols and there is also time to socialize with your colleagues.

jobs

A letter of motivation is often a requirement to apply. After this, you may or may not receive an invitation to one initial interview, the same goes for the second call. You must complete an assessment before the second interview takes place. During the appointment procedure you will also be called for a medical examination, which must be positive.

Rijkswaterstaat

Rijkswaterstaat has been responsible for road and water since 1798. Our work has changed considerably over the centuries. The origins of Rijkswaterstaat lie in the French period (1795 to 1813). Water care is then still fragmented across the national government, the provinces, water boards and local authorities. But the condition of the riverbeds is poor and the dikes are weak. This leads to catastrophic flooding. The large amount of damage requires a national approach.

Rijkswaterstaat was founded in 1798 as the Bureau for Water Management

That is why a national organization was founded in 1798, the Bureau for Water Management. In 1848 they renamed it Rijkswaterstaat. The most important tasks are the construction, management and maintenance of rivers, canals, flood defenses and reclaimed land (polders). The battle against the water is not over yet. This is evident from the floods of the major rivers in 1993 and 1995 and new insights into climate change. They use our past to work on the future. Protection against high water will therefore remain high on the agenda in the 21st century. In addition, issues related to quality of life and mobility remain important agenda items. Together with expert partners, they continue to work towards a safe, liveable and accessible Netherlands.
