This is evident from new figures on check-in transactions for trains, buses, trams and metros, compiled by Statistics Netherlands and Translink.

January 2023 was the first January without corona measures since 2020. Almost 91 million people checked in on public transport. That is more than 63 percent more than in January 2022, but still almost 22 percent less than in January 2020.

In 2022, public transport was checked in least in January: more than 55 million times. November saw the highest number of check-ins, with almost 100 miljoen check in. This is 18 percent lower than in November 2019, before the corona measures. Because one traveler can check in several times per day, the number of check-ins is higher than the number of travelers.
