In 2022, more than 475 thousand passengers flew to and from the airports of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius. That is almost 64 percent more than in 2021 and 4 percent more than in 2019. The number of air transport movements to and from these airports was almost 14 percent higher than in 2021. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on new figures.
In July and December 2022, most passengers traveled to and from the three airports in the Caribbean Netherlands: 45 thousand in both months. Saturday 19 February was the busiest day. That day, 2,5 thousand travelers passed through the terminals of Flamingo Airport on Bonaire, FD Roosevelt Airport on Sint Eustatius or Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport on Saba.
Most passengers fly to and from Bonaire
In 2022, almost 432 thousand travelers landed at or departed from Flamingo Airport on Bonaire; that is 91 percent of all passengers on the Caribbean Netherlands. For the airports of Sint Eustatius and Saba, this was 5 and 4 percent respectively. The runway of Flamingo Airport on Bonaire is three kilometers long, allowing larger aircraft to land. The runways on Saba and Sint Eustatius are shorter, which is why smaller aircraft are flown on these islands.
Largest increase in number of air passengers on Bonaire
Compared to the pre-corona year 2019, 2022 percent more travelers traveled to and from the islands of the Caribbean Netherlands in 4. These extra passengers all traveled to and from Bonaire: from 384 thousand passengers in 2019 to 432 thousand in 2022, an increase of more than 12 percent. The number of flights to and from Bonaire in 2022 was well below the level of 2019.
More flights to and from Saba
In 2022, more than 8,6 thousand flights were performed at the airports of Sint Eustatius and Saba together. This was 44 percent of all flights to and from the Caribbean Netherlands and 16,4 percent more than in 2021. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport on Saba was the only one of the three airports on the Caribbean Netherlands where the number of flights increased in 2022 compared to 2019 .
From Saba and Sint Eustatius most flights to and from Sint Maarten
In both 2019 and 2022, the most flights to and from Bonaire were on Curaçao and Amsterdam; respectively 84 and 78 percent of the flights. Most flights from the airports of Saba and Sint Eustatius together are to and from Sint Maarten, in 2022 83 percent.
Bonaire Airport will be the fourth airport in the Netherlands in 2022
In 2022, almost 11,2 thousand flights were performed at Flamingo Airport on Bonaire. This puts Bonaire in fourth place among Dutch airports after Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Eindhoven Airport and Rotterdam The Hague Airport.
