Train traffic in Belgium will be severely disrupted on Monday, January 13, due to a strike organized by an interprofessional trade union action.
NMBS has introduced an alternative train service that will be in effect from Sunday evening 12 January at 22.00:XNUMX until Monday evening. This transport plan has been drawn up based on the available staff at NMBS and Infrabel, including essential functions such as train conductors and staff in the signal boxes.
Travelers should expect a significant reduction in services. Only one in three IC trains, the intercity trains that connect major cities, will run. In addition, 20 percent of local (L trains) and suburban (S trains) trains will be used. P trains, which are specifically intended for rush hours, will hardly run at all.
NMBS advises travellers to adjust their plans and to consult the alternative train service in good time via the NMBS website, app or the travel information boards at stations. Students with exams are strongly advised to plan their journeys to their student room or exam location carefully and to travel on Sunday evening where possible.
normal train traffic
Train traffic will gradually resume from Tuesday morning, January 14. NMBS emphasizes that the transport plan is flexible and that travelers must also take into account possible weather conditions, such as snow or ice, which can cause additional disruption.

Other transport companies are also experiencing problems due to the strike. The Brussels transport company MIVB expects significant disruptions to its services. Attempts are being made to keep part of the network operational, but travellers are being informed in real time of any cancellations.
The Walloon transport company TEC also reports that bus traffic will be affected, with cancelled journeys that will only be announced on the day itself via the online journey planner. In Flanders, De Lijn does not expect any disruptions on Monday.
information provision
In order to keep travellers as well informed as possible, NMBS is working with Infrabel on a real-time information service. The screens in the stations and the online journey planner only show trains that are actually running. This should prevent travellers from waiting in vain for a train.
With these measures, NMBS hopes to limit the impact of the strike. Nevertheless, the railway company regrets the inconvenience for its passengers and emphasises the importance of good preparation for everyone who wants to travel by train on Monday.
