The persistent problems of the 737 Max Boeing will cost billions. Today Boeing has put an amount on it: The company keeps 4.4 billion euros in reserve. In addition, a further 180 aircraft have been ordered. Boeing has thus lost its position as the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world. Nevertheless, aviation economists expect the company to survive these blows.

All Boeings 737 Max have been grounded since March this year, as a result of the crash of two aircraft in Indonesia and Ethiopia, resulting in a total of 346 deaths. Probable Cause: A sensor was providing false information, causing an automatic safety system to continuously send the nose of the aircraft down.

It is still unknown when the aircraft type can be launched again. Boeing estimates that it will be the last quarter of this year. Until then, no more 737's Max are being delivered and production has been scaled down.

The damage increases every day the longer the plane is on the ground. Deliveries of the new 737's Max are also being postponed, causing problems for the airlines. They have to adjust their flight schedules, rent aircraft or fly longer with older aircraft. For example, Ryanair announced this week that the schedule for the summer of 2020 has already been adjusted.

The damage suffered will be partly recovered from Boeing. Ryanair is said to have already concluded a deal on compensation and Chinese airlines also want that. They already estimate their losses at more than 500 million euros in May.
