Travel organizations are not yet eager to cut air travel at short distances. To counter CO2 emissions, travel company TUI announced yesterday to stop offering air travel to Paris. Those who want to go to the French capital with TUI from the autumn of 2020 must take the train.

Although there is a positive response from the industry to the plan, no other travel organizations are yet to scrap short-haul flights. These are flights of less than 700 kilometers, such as to Paris, London or Berlin.

Travel agency Stedentrips.nl says that the number of air travel to Paris is minimal. “With us, less than 5 percent of people opt for this. The journey by train is faster and often also cheaper. ”

However, the provider does not choose to completely cancel air travel. "But we mainly focus on train journeys and try to improve the technology there, so that, for example, booking becomes easier."

The city trip provider already offers train journeys on many routes, including to London, Berlin and even to Vienna. "Vienna is our farthest destination by train, but not many people do."

Travel agency D-Reizen also recognizes the importance of traveling by train. The organization saw the number of booked train journeys increase by 27 percent in the past year.

D-Reizen does not intend to cancel air travel, but does try to encourage train travel. “We are expanding our range of train round trips and also offering a train trip to Disneyland Paris. We are trying to include more trips from providers who work a lot with the train. ”

Airline company Transavia, which flies six times a week from Amsterdam to Paris, indicates not to stop the flights yet.

Traveling to cities by train often takes longer than by plane. This is partly because the connection is not always smooth, says Stedentrips.nl. The travel time is also a reason for TUI not to cancel air travel to other destinations. “For cities like London or Berlin, the connection is not ideal at the moment. As soon as travel by train is more attractive, railways can also take priority for these destinations. ”
