Some 180 flights in Germany have been canceled today due to cabin crew strikes from Lufthansa's budget subsidiary Germanwings. The conflict has been going on for months and has previously led to strikes. For example, 1300 flights were canceled due to a strike in November.

As a total surprise, the strike did not come within the aviation sector. The German cabin crew Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organization (UFO) union announced the strikes between December 30 and January 1 last weekend. The union is demanding higher wages for the airline's cabin crew.

Germanwings operates flights for sister company Eurowings. The company operates thirty of the approximately 140 Eurowings aircraft.

Flights from airports near Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf are hit by the strike. Some flights from Germany to Austria and Switzerland have also been canceled. Many affected flights are local travel. Train tickets are offered to these affected passengers or flights can be rebooked.
