The National Vehicle Crime Information Center (LIV) is a collaboration between the RDW, the Police and the Dutch Vehicle Crimes Insurance Association (VbV). The aim of their cooperation is to support the judiciary and the police in investigations into vehicle crime.

The employees of the LIV consist of employees of the VbV, employees of the RDW and employees of the National Unit. LIV has expertise in vehicle crime and refining and providing information within the applicable laws and regulations. The LIV published the following information:

In the first half of 2020, the number of stolen passenger cars fell by 9,3%. A total of 3772 passenger cars were stolen. Passenger cars of 4 years and older show the strongest decrease at 11,3%. Light commercial vehicles, on the other hand, show a significant increase: 844 were stolen, compared to 650 in the first 6 months of last year. In Amsterdam, thefts fell sharply by more than 19%, Rotterdam shows a sharp increase of 16% over the total number of thefts.

"The decrease in the number of stolen passenger cars contrasts sharply with the sharp increase in theft of light commercial vehicles and shows that customization in both prevention and detection is desirable," says Hendrik Steller, Manager of the National Vehicle Crime Information Center.

New brands
Toyota, Renault, Fiat, Lexus and Mazda stand out this first half year due to an increase in the number of thefts. Traditional brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Opel show a steady decline. Among the hybrid vehicles, Toyota and Lexus are the most stolen brands.
Passenger cars from 0-3 years, which were stolen considerably less in March, April and May, again showed an increase of more than 27% in June.

Light commercial vehicles

In this category, we see a steady increase in the number of thefts over all months. Only 33,4% of light commercial vehicles are found. Thefts mainly take place in the southern provinces and in the Rotterdam region. Mercedes and Volkswagen are the most stolen.
