The Waasland tunnel under the river De Schelde will be closed in both directions at night. The contractor will take approx four months need to complete everything on site. During the works in the Waasland tunnel itself, the tunnel will be completely closed to all traffic in both directions. From Monday 22 February, a contractor on behalf of the Roads and Traffic Agency will start renewing the traffic techniques in the Waasland tunnel.

The techniques on the tunnel squares on the left and right bank are also being overhauled. The works will be carried out at night to limit the nuisance to traffic. The tunnel is then closed in both directions. During the activities the Kennedy tunnel is the only free option to drive south from the Antwerp ring road. The toll tunnel can be used further north in the port area.

The Waaslandtunnel, popularly also called the “rabbit pipe”, or after its builder the Imalso tunnel, is the oldest vehicle tunnel under the Scheldt that connects Antwerp with the Left Bank. In addition to a complete overhaul of the traffic technology, which is outdated, loudspeakers will also be installed in and in front of the tunnel and the signaling, barriers and traffic lights will be replaced.
