In January, according to official figures from BOVAG, RAI Association and RDC, 30.984 new passenger cars were registered, which is a decrease of 11,2 percent compared to the first month in 2021. Nearly 1 in 10 new cars last month was electrically powered.

Since RDC reports the registrations of new vehicles on a monthly basis (2007), not so few passenger cars have been registered as in January 2022. BOVAG and RAI Association attribute the low numbers to the ongoing worldwide shortage of computer chips, which is why many manufacturers experience delivery problems. However, dealers report full order books, but many of the cars already ordered simply cannot be delivered yet. The sector organizations are counting on this problem to persist until at least mid-2022 and assume a total of 390.000 new passenger cars this year. In 2021, 323.000 new cars were registered.

Addition and subsidy

Since 1 January 2022, a higher rate of 16 percent tax addition has been applied to business drivers for the private use of a new electric passenger car, and that rate only applies to the first 35.000 euros of the recommended retail price. Last year this was 12 percent on the first 40.000 euros, which is why as many business electric cars as possible were registered in December 2021. At the same time, a purchase subsidy of 3.350 euros has been available for private buyers of EVs since the beginning of this year. About two thirds of the more than 3.000 new electric cars in January were therefore registered in the name of a private individual, through direct purchase or via private lease. Until January 27, almost 6,5 million subsidy had been requested from the total annual budget of more than 20 million euros, according to BOVAG.
