Coldplay has partnered with Neste to take steps towards the band's goal of reducing CO2 emissions from the Music Of The Spheres World Tour by 50% compared to the band's previous world tour. Neste supplies Coldplay with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to help reduce emissions from flying. The company's renewable diesel will help reduce emissions from the band's tour transportation and stage power generation.

In 2019, Coldplay put touring on hold until it could be done in a more sustainable way. To realize the ambition for more sustainable touring, Coldplay has, among other things, explored lower-emission alternatives for aircraft, power generators and road vehicles, which are necessary for a successful world tour. Sustainable jet fuel and renewable diesel turned out to be the best option for this.

As the world's largest producer and supplier of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, Neste is in a unique position to provide Coldplay with the necessary amount of renewable fuels – produced from 100% renewable raw materials, such as spent cooking oil – to reduce emissions from the North Sea. US and European stages of the Music Of The Spheres World Tour.

Neste is helping Coldplay reduce tour-related carbon emissions with Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, which can reduce carbon emissions from flying by up to 80% compared to using conventional jet fuel. Coldplay will also use Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ for the trucks that transport the band's equipment from one concert venue to another during the tour.

“We are thrilled to be working with Neste to make our Music Of The Spheres World Tour as sustainable as possible. Their low-emission renewable fuels play an important role in our efforts to minimize the tour's impact on the climate” .

"We've tried to put sustainability at the heart of this tour because it feels like the only option."

Neste's renewable diesel will also be used in stationary power generators, generating low-emission renewable electricity for the concert. Coldplay uses the renewable diesel on stage or in logistics at a total of seven Coldplay concerts in the US and at 22 concerts in Europe. It is estimated that with Neste's renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, Coldplay can reduce its transportation-related carbon footprint by up to approximately 50% during the North American and European stages of the world tour.

“Coldplay is one of the world's most popular touring bands, and their ambition to make their Music Of The Spheres World Tour as sustainable as possible is extremely inspiring. The world needs these kinds of pacesetters to lead the way towards a more sustainable future. We at Neste are excited and proud to join forces with Coldplay to help reduce emissions from their world tour and associated transportation with our renewable fuels.”

Renewable fuels reduce global transport emissions

Next has been developing sustainable solutions to tackle rising greenhouse gas emissions for over twenty years. During that time, Neste has transformed from a regional oil refinery in Finland into the industry's first and only company with production facilities on three continents and the capacity to supply renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel and renewable raw materials for the polymer and chemical industries worldwide.

Neste's proprietary NEXBTL refining technology enables it to process low-quality waste and residues into renewable products. The company's annual production capacity of 3,3 million tons of high-quality renewable fuels and other renewable products will increase to 2023 million tons by early 4,5 and is expected to increase further to 5,5 million tons by the end of 2023.

“Many solutions to combat climate change are still at an early stage of development, but Neste's renewable fuels are already available and widely deployed by cities and towns, businesses, airlines, consumers - and now even Coldplay, one of the the world's most popular bands - to reduce the carbon footprint of their transportation. We hope their example inspires many others to do what they can to create a healthier planet for our children."
