PostNL has recently started delivering parcels in the city center of The Hague using small, emission-free LEFVs (light electric freight vehicles). This is good for the quality of life in the city centre: the trolleys are quiet and clean. The parcels are transported from the PostNL parcel sorting center in Den Hoorn to the small LEFV city hub in Uitenhagestraat on the edge of the center of The Hague. From there, parcels are delivered to consumers and businesses in the city center of The Hague.

“As the municipality of The Hague, we do a lot to ensure that parcels are delivered in a cleaner way. For example, there is an environmental zone that the most polluting trucks are not allowed to enter. With the national Green Deal, we are encouraging suppliers to bring goods only with their cleanest truck or van. I see more and more beautiful sustainable initiatives in the city. It is good to see that we are working together to ensure a clean and liveable city.”

“I am pleased that we now deliver parcels with LEFVs in my city center in The Hague. With these narrow cars, cyclists can pass more easily and we can deliver in every alley. I like to drive them, because they maneuver easily in between and I get a lot of positive reactions. And because they are electric, they drive cleaner and quieter. That is good for the environment and the climate and makes this form of delivery extra suitable for the city center of The Hague.”

Emission-free delivery

The LEFVs are part of PostNL's more than 2100 electric vehicles. In addition, 50% of our own vehicle fleet is more sustainable due to the use of biogas, BIO-LNG, sustainable fuel and electric buses. Thanks to our sustainable sorting centers, mail and parcels are sorted 100% CO₂ neutral. PostNL delivers the mail and letterbox packages emission-free to 96% of Dutch home addresses. In the city centers more and more deliveries are made with small, sustainable vehicles such as cargo bikes and LEFVs. After Arnhem and Groningen, The Hague is the third city in the Netherlands where PostNL delivers parcels with LEFVs. The LEVVSs are produced in the Netherlands and have been further developed especially for PostNL for parcel delivery.

City hub for bundled business transport

PostNL also offers other solutions for a cleaner and accessible city. The Hague hub, which opened in 2020, is a good example of this. From this hub, PostNL City Logistics supplies about 220 locations in the city of the central government and other government bodies and companies. Suppliers can deliver their goods (stable office supplies such as printer paper and sanitary products) for companies to the hub on the outskirts of the city where everything is bundled. This saves transport movements and CO₂ emissions in the city, because the goods are then delivered in one go with small, electric trucks, according to the municipality The Hague.
