Significant investments are needed in the Flemish tunnels.

Anyone who often has the Antwerp R1 on his navigation system knows the situation by now. Huge traffic jams, delays and work. From August 21, the work will be added to this by renewing the lighting in the Kennedy tunnel. There will be a completely new LED installation with intelligent control and the fire-resistant wall plates will be renewed. The works are expected to last until mid-May 2023.

The Kennedytunnel on the Antwerp Ring R1 is closed in one direction between 21 p.m. and 5 a.m. Traffic is then routed through the other tunnel shaft, leaving only one lane available in each direction. It is therefore best to take into account hindrance in both directions. The tunnel is closed in the direction of Ghent during the first night and closed in the direction of the Netherlands during the second night. The neighboring Linkeroever ramp of the R1 will also be closed during both nights, starting at 20.30 pm.

AWV

Several times a year, the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) carries out periodic maintenance work on the tunnels it manages. This concerns smaller maintenance work such as cleaning tunnel walls, clearing gullies and checking lighting. The works will take place at night to minimize disruption to traffic.

The investments in tunnels are part of a broader plan for the renewal of Flemish roads, bridges, tunnels and locks. Many of those works of art were built in the XNUMXs and XNUMXs, and today we see a peak in the age of that infrastructure.

Significant investments are needed in the Flemish tunnels managed by the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV). A changed traffic image, stricter safety regulations, new expectations, higher requirements for reliability and availability mean that thorough renovations are necessary.
