Compared to the first three quarters of 2021, sales of new mopeds (including speed pedelecs) rose by 44 percent this year to 28.998 units.

The popularity of electric (EV) mopeds and light mopeds continues. This is apparent from figures from the RAI Association, BOVAG and data center RDC for the first three quarters of 2022. Compared to the first three quarters of 2021, sales of new mopeds (including speed pedelecs) have increased by 44 percent this year to 28.998 units. That is the highest number for this period of the year since 2009. The share of electric in new sales of mopeds rose to 47% compared to 31% in the same period in 2021 (excluding speed pedelecs). With the arrival of the mandatory helmet requirement for light mopeds as of 1 January 2023, there is a clear shift towards the purchase of mopeds (+51%). The sale of mopeds fell by 40%. The share of speed pedelecs also increased by 7%.

Almost 50% is electric

BOVAG and RAI Vereniging are pleased that travelers are increasingly choosing to travel quickly and without emissions on short and medium distances. Almost 1 in 2 mopeds and mopeds sold is electric, which means that these means of transport are at the forefront of sustainability. According to the RAI Association and BOVAG, manufacturers have invested heavily in recent years in expanding the range of electric scooters, but also in fast bicycles such as the speed pedelec, which sold 7% more than in the first quarters of 2021. A positive development. Both industry associations have also previously signed the climate agreement and remain committed to zero-emission transport.

Popular brands

Piaggio (including Vespa) is the most popular brand in the first three quarters of 2022 with a 13,7% share of total moped and light moped sales. La Souris has a market share of 12,4% and SYM 9,5%.

Decrease of moped sales

The declining popularity of mopeds is largely due to the national helmet requirement for mopeds, which will come into effect on 1 January. This also applies to the shift from the sale of mopeds (-40%) to the sale of mopeds (51%). 2021 mopeds were sold in 9 in the first 42.965 months, now there are only 25.834, according to RAI Association.
