There is a major task with the vehicle fleet, which in 2021 still caused 50% of the CO2 emissions of the municipal organization.

The municipality of Amstelveen wants to be an energy neutral organization from 2030. In order to achieve this objective, the Municipal Executive has approved the plan to make heavier and specialist diesel vehicles such as trucks, road sweepers and equipment emission-free in the coming years.

“In recent years, our passenger cars and field service vehicles have already started to drive electrically. With this plan, the feasibility of a CO2 neutral vehicle and machine park in 2030 is expected to be 95 to 99%. In addition to sustainability in order to reduce CO2 emissions, this plan also contributes to cleaner air for our residents, because we emit less particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. That is why the step towards an emission-free fleet is very important for the municipality."

Implement transition plan

There is a major task with the vehicle fleet, which in 2021 still caused 50% of the CO2 emissions of the municipal organization. In recent years, the passenger vehicles, scooters and 35 small commercial vehicles used by district management, waste management, supervision and enforcement have already been replaced by electric vehicles and bicycles. In the coming years, the fleet will become more sustainable, with the diesel vehicles being replaced by a combination of battery electric (BEV) and possibly hydrogen electric (FCEV) in the long term.

The proposal is to fully commit to electric vehicles until at least 2026. A large part of the trucks and sweepers can already be replaced by an electric variant. No good electric variants are yet available for combating slipperiness. For this purpose, temporary use will be made of HVO fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), which will achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

In the period 2026 to 2030, the municipality expects that more will be known about hydrogen variants as an alternative to the remaining tools and vehicles. The transition plan shows the replacement schedule for 16 commercial vehicles, 17 trucks, 16 tools and 3 sweepers. The financial consequences of this proposal have been incorporated into the Perspective Memorandum 2024, which the city council will decide on in July, according to the municipality of Amstelveen.
