Lightning call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a historic announcement.

At the airbase in Eindhoven, where normally the sound of aircraft taking off and landing predominates, it was the turn of diplomatic statements this Sunday. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a historic announcement. The skies over Ukraine will soon hear the hum of F-16 fighter jets supplied by the Netherlands and Denmark.

It was a meeting that showed solidarity and strategic cooperation. Zelensky, whose request for F-16s has been on the table for a long time, spoke of a "historic decision" and marked it as a "new stage in the strengthening of Ukrainian airspace". These words resonate with Ukraine's continued desire to strengthen its defense capabilities at a time of regional tensions.

However, this agreement was not without his preparations. Training for Ukrainian pilots to fly these advanced aircraft was already in full swing. These anticipatory steps demonstrate the commitment and confidence of both countries in this cooperation. According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, Ukrainian engineers and technicians are also being trained in addition to pilots. This underscores Ukraine's long-term vision not only to receive aircraft, but also to build a self-sufficient capacity for the maintenance and management of these aircraft.

Not to be forgotten is the crucial role of the United States. As the original creators of the F-16, their approval was essential. After approval last Thursday, it is now only a matter of time before the F-16s find their new home in Ukraine. However, several months will elapse before the actual delivery takes place.

Olena Zelenska

Despite the aviation talks between leaders of the Netherlands and Ukraine, there was an equally heartwarming and crucial visit on another front. Olena Zelenska, the first lady of Ukraine, visited the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht.

The visit was not only ceremonial, but emphasized an existing and strong collaboration between Dutch and Ukrainian medical professionals. Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, dozens of children affected by the horrific disease of cancer have received much-needed care and treatment in Utrecht. It is a collaboration that not only saves lives, but also underlines the deep bonds of humanity and professionalism between the two countries.

Doctors from Lviv, an important city in western Ukraine, have worked closely with their Dutch colleagues to provide these children with the best possible care. This medical bridge is now further strengthened with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Princess Máxima Center and a leading hospital in Lviv. The focus of this memorandum goes beyond direct patient care. It aims at an exchange of knowledge and best practices, training and education for medical professionals from both countries, and deepening the cooperation mechanisms for patient care.
