Just this year, the cooperation agreement was signed between the national government and the region for the exploration of extending the North/South line to Hoofddorp.

This project, now known as the 'Amsterdam-Haarlemmermeer Public Transport Connection' (OVAH), is a crucial part of the Multi-Year Infrastructure, Space and Transport Program (MIRT). The cooperation agreement was signed by representatives of the municipalities of Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Pro-Rail, KLM, Schiphol, NS and Schiphol Area Development Company (SADC).

This exploration is not only a formal process but plays a key role in the future development of the region. The Metropolis region Amsterdam (MRA) is currently home to 2,4 million people, and this number, together with the number of businesses and travelers, is expected to continue to rise. To support this growth and guarantee the accessibility of the region, expansion of the public transport network is essential.

The Amsterdam Zuid stations, Schiphol Airport and the Schiphol railway tunnel in particular are experiencing capacity problems, and this pressure is only expected to increase. The new public transport connection is therefore crucial to relieve the growing pressure on public transport. This project will not only help create more space on the railway at Schiphol, but also contribute to the development of the Spoorzone in Hoofddorp, where 10.000 new homes and 11.000 jobs are expected.

"By signing we emphasize that we are working on the exploration. This project is urgently needed to create more space on the Schiphol track so that we can accommodate more (inter)national trains and fewer people use short-distance flights. In addition, this project is important for the development of Spoorzone in Hoofddorp. An area where 10.000 homes and 11.000 new jobs will soon be created."

Alderman for Traffic and Transport Marja Ruigrok emphasizes the importance of this project for both local and international accessibility. In addition to improving public transport connections, the project will also focus on solving national and international accessibility problems, including capacity and safety problems around the Schiphol tunnel and transfer problems at Schiphol and Zuid stations.

The project goes beyond just transport. It will also contribute to social challenges such as housing, employment, green development, climate, ecology, environment and energy, with sustainability being a leading factor in all phases of the project. MIRT stands for Multi-Year Program Infrastructure, Space and Transport. And is a government investment program. The directors of the partners paying for this MIRT exploration (the municipality of Amsterdam and the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, Pro-Rail, KLM, Schiphol, NS and SADC) have signed the cooperation agreement for the exploration phase.
