The Sunday documentary 'Taxi in lockdown' by Floor Amesz and Arnout Arens asked the question 'How is the self-employed existence of the taxi drivers affected by the corona crisis?' Today at 20.30 pm there is a livecast organized by De Zwijger about the VPRO Tegenlicht program.

To the live cast In addition to director Amesz and compiler Arens, Amrit Sewgobind (FNV Taxi), Mei Li Vis (Chairman of the First Chamber of the PvdA and former member of the House of Representatives), Emile Woutersen (Investigative journalist Platform Investico and author of 'Exploited') and Hedy Borreman (Director of Taxicentrale Amsterdam) part. If you are interested, you can join the discussion via Zoom.

What was VPRO Tegenlicht 'Taxi in lockdown' all about? Taxi drivers worldwide are hit hard by the corona crisis. Since the success of the Uber app and other ride-sharing services such as Bolt, FreeNow and Lyft, many of them have been self-employed. They have often made large investments (usually in the taxi license), now lose their income and run a high risk of infection.

VPRO Tegenlicht joined these independent taxi drivers in Amsterdam, Wuhan, New York, Tehran, Tel Aviv, Rio de Janeiro and Kisumu. They showed their life, their work, and their abandoned cities. Tomorrow evening, the compilers will talk to insiders about the impact of the current crisis on those who have been forced into a self-employed life by our platform society. How are they affected by the lack of work? And what can be done about it?
