Setting the curfew has more feet than it does expected because the provincial decree that the extra corona measures in Antwerp had to lay down by law does not get round. Therefore, the governor will not be able to proclaim the measures. And the most drastic measure, a curfew between half past 12 in the evening and 6 a.m., cannot officially start on Tuesday 28 July 2020.

curfew for the entire province of Antwerp

Yesterday, Antwerp announced a whole series of measures because there are a strikingly large number of new infections in the province. Everywhere on the public domain you will have to wear a mask, and telework is required. And so there would be a curfew between half past eleven and six in the morning.

These measures still had to be laid down in a provincial decision, the legal basis. For example, the police can also intervene if the measures are not complied with, and impose fines. But that legal text is no longer getting round today. As a result, the measures in the province cannot yet officially start. However, that was the intention, Antwerp governor Cathy Berx told earlier today in “Het Journaal” at 13 pm.

The corona figures meanwhile continue to rise in Belgium. The average number of infections is already 311 per day. Due to the high contamination figures in Antwerp, additional corona measures were imposed for the province yesterday, such as a curfew and an obligation to telework.
