The night train network is on the rise again in Europe. Sleep well on the train and wake up the next day at your destination. The night train connection between Zurich (Switzerland) and Amsterdam will return from December 2021. Until 2016, this night train also operated from the Netherlands, but this was not financially profitable.

The Swiss (SBB) and Austrian (ÖBB) rail operators recently released their plans in a press release. They have also both signed the corresponding letter of intent. The Swiss and Austrian rail operators are going to work together to expand the night train network. In this way, they strengthen their long-term cooperation in the field of international passenger transport.

They have announced that new night trains are planned from Switzerland to Amsterdam, Barcelona and Rome. They want to expand the night train network from 6 lines to 10 lines. The Austrian and Swiss rail operators do not have night train coaches of their own and will therefore lease them in Germany.

From December 2021, the Night Train will run daily between Zurich-Basel-Frankfurt-Cologne-Amsterdam. There will also be a new line in the future from Zurich via Bern, Brig, Domodossola to Rome. And a line from Zurich via Bern, Lausanne, Geneva to Barcelona. It is not yet known when these two train connections will start.

Vincent Ducrot, CEO of SBB, is convinced that the demand for train travel for fast day connections and night trains will continue to grow. 'This development is sustainable and the demand for environmentally friendly and resource-saving mobility will continue to grow'.
