Wizz Air, Europe's fastest growing and greenest airline (Wizz Air's carbon dioxide emissions were the lowest among European airlines in FY2019 (57,2 gr / km / passenger), has launched a carbon offset scheme as part of its broader commitment to emissions, allowing passengers to calculate the environmental impact of their flight and offsetting its CO2 emissions. The scheme, in partnership with climate-focused technology company CHOOOSE, allows passengers to offset their journey through reliable, impactful climate projects on worldwide, Wizz Air reports on their website.

By entering flight details in the travel footprint calculator at wizzair.com, passengers can easily calculate and offset the CO2 emissions of their flight. To justify their CO2 emissions, passengers can simply make a payment in support of a verified CO2 offset and in return receive a certificate acknowledging the emissions they have offset.

Wizz Air is initially supporting two verified carbon reduction projects; The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TIST) in Uganda, an award-winning and long-standing reforestation project, and the Pichacay Landfill Gas to Renewable Energy Project in Ecuador, which recovers methane from the landfill and reuses it to produce clean electricity. Both projects are certified by the Verified Carbon Standard to measurably reduce emissions.

Marion Geoffroy, Chief Corporate Officer at Wizz Air, said: “We strive to be the greenest airline as we work hard to continuously reduce our environmental footprint. Through a wide range of sustainability initiatives, we are proud to already have one of the lowest emission rates in the European aviation industry and we are delighted to partner with CHOOOSE to provide our passengers with carbon offset. Together with our modern aircraft fleet, various fuel-saving initiatives, maximization of passenger loading, a network design that avoids unnecessary connecting flights and the lightest materials used in the cabin, we ensure that Wizz Air is the best and most environmentally friendly choice that passengers can to make".
