Consumers who are going to move can engage a reputable moving company for this. It is also possible to find someone on a moving platform on the internet who offers cheap moving services. An inventory shows that many providers of removal services do not have the required professional transport license. "A consumer therefore runs the risk that his household effects will get stuck along the road." The ILT will therefore check and inform moving companies, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate reports this through this news item on their website.

500 kilo load capacity

The ILT thinks that many providers of removal services do not realize that there are rules for freight transport for payment. “You already need a permit for the commercial transport of goods with a vehicle with a load capacity of more than 500 kg,” explains inspector and project manager Danique van Broekhoven. “This does not only apply to companies with large trucks, companies with smaller moving vans also need a permit in many cases. The license ensures that the companies meet the requirements of professional competence, reliability and creditworthiness. ”

Comparison data

The ILT has collected data from companies that have registered with the Chamber of Commerce. These data were compared with the data of license holders at the NIWO (National and International Road Transport Organization Foundation). For movers without a permit, the loading capacity of their vehicles was then verified at the RDW. The ILT inventory shows that more than 60% of movers do not have a permit.

Risks

Moving without a permit often goes hand in hand with non-compliance with other rules, such as the collective labor agreement. This creates unfair competition with moving companies that do adhere to the rules. This damage to a level playing field is one of the reasons that the ILT supervises this. "If the ILT checks a transporter along the road and catches it without a permit, it will be fined € 4.400 for the first violation." It can also be annoying for customers if their move fails along the way. “You have to realize that your belongings are not insured during the ride if you go into the sea with a hare. The consumer runs a real risk here. ”

Information campaign

The ILT will initiate a telephone campaign to point out their duties and risks to movers. In the coming months, around 85 removal companies will be called and informed about the rules. The aim is twofold, on the one hand to collect and register information and on the other hand to inform and encourage companies to comply with transport legislation. Van Broekhoven: "Later we can check whether the movers have taken action and applied for a permit."

Tips for customers

Consumers who engage a moving company can also do something to prevent their household effects from stranding on the side of the road. Van Broekhoven: “Customers would do well to check whether they are working with a bona fide company. You can check whether the company has a permit via the NIWO website. Do you suspect that a company is moving without a permit? Then report this to the ILT or the NIWO ”.

Partnerships

This information and monitoring campaign is part of a collaboration between the ILT, the sector organization for Recognized Movers (OEV), Codekamer Movers, the Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate (ISZW), Stichting Vervoersbond Compliance Professional Goods Transport by Road (VNB) and Transport and Logistics Netherlands (TLN) to combat unfair competition and abuses in the removal industry to pack.
