On-demand mobility service Bolt makes it possible for travelers to pay contactlessly. While it was a basic need for many users to open the app, order a ride and pay with a debit card - the latter was not possible until today. Bolt is now the first ride hailing service in the Netherlands that makes it possible for every traveler to pay for their ride contactlessly with a debit card or mobile phone within seconds. “The Netherlands is not a typical credit card country. Research shows that in 2019 67% of the Dutch pay with a debit card, 32,5% with cash and only 0,5% with a credit card. 64% of all debit card transactions were contactless, and this percentage increases monthly. We therefore received feedback from many users that they greatly miss the opportunity to pay by debit card for their ride with Bolt, ”says operations manager Lars Speekenbrink.

According to De Nederlandse Bank, contactless debit card has long since left other payment methods such as cash, credit card or 'normal' debit card behind. Contactless payment is expected to increase in popularity in the coming years. Hundreds of Bolt drivers receive the iZettle Reader 2 from Bolt. This is a payment terminal that accepts chip, pin and contactless payments with debit, credit and mobile payments via Android Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The terminal connects to the Retail POS app and smartphone via Bluetooth.
Bolt is one of the fastest growing mobility platforms in Europe and Africa with investors including Daimler, Didi Chuxing, Korelya Capital and TransferWise co-founder Taavet Hinrikus.
