Sharon Dijksma will be sworn in as the new mayor of Utrecht on Wednesday evening in the presence of a limited number of people. Sharon Dijksma (PvdA) has been alderman for Traffic, Transport and Air Quality in Amsterdam in recent years and succeeds Jan van Zanen who left for The Hague last summer. 

Due to the tightened corona measures announced by the government last Monday, the extraordinary council meeting on December 16 cannot take place in TivoliVredenburg. Instead, the farewell of Peter den Oudsten as acting mayor of Utrecht and the swearing-in of Sharon Dijksma in an adapted form in the council chamber of the town hall.

The Council of Ministers had previously decided, at the suggestion of Minister Ollongren of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, to nominate her for appointment. The appointment will take effect on December 17, 2020. The nomination of Sharon Dijksma as the intended new mayor of Utrecht came as a complete surprise to Amsterdam. It is now up to the PvdA to determine who will hold the post of alderman until the 2022 council elections.

Sharon Alida Maria Dijksma is a Dutch politician. On behalf of the Labor Party, she has been a councilor for traffic and transport of Amsterdam since 30 May 2018. Dijksma previously served as State Secretary for Infrastructure and the Environment in the Rutte II cabinet, State Secretary for Economic Affairs in that cabinet and State Secretary for Education in the Balkenende IV cabinet and in several periods a Member of Parliament.
