Air Canada flight makes unscheduled Boeing 737-8 MAX landing after pilots were forced to shut down one engine. Safety experts say such failures are common and usually go unnoticed, but the manufacturer is bracing for increased monitoring.

Modern aircraft are designed to operate with one engine and train our crews for such operations. The only people on board were three crew members who got an "engine indication" and "decided to shut one engine off".

Boeing's reputation was torn to shreds as it fought to get more commercial space for its more economical fleet. The MAX was the cause of two fatal crashes - in Indonesia in late 2018 and Ethiopia in early 2019, killing 346 people, both blamed for flawed cockpit software rather than engine problems. In both cases, the software - called MCAS - repeatedly pushed the aircraft's nose down, causing it to plunge.

Regulators have cleared the Boeing 737 MAX to resume flying 20 months after the fleet landed worldwide after two deadly crashes. The plane's flight control software was at the center of the American company's redesign efforts.
