The 'Bag recognition' test at Eindhoven Airport will be extended until 2023. According to Eindhoven Airport, the use of artificial intelligence when checking in hold baggage is reliable and workable. With this trial, baggage labeling will soon be a thing of the past. Vanderlande and BagsID have performed this 'Bag recognition' test at Eindhoven Airport, this test will now be extended until 2023.

Ivar van der Smaal, Innovation Manager of Eindhoven Airport: “The first phase of the trial has been successfully completed. The camera setups in the Eindhoven Airport baggage system have shown that the technology can be very useful and can offer many advantages. Nevertheless, the luggage labels with barcodes will not disappear for the time being, Van der Smaal emphasizes. The information on the baggage labels contains a mandatory 10-digit code, which is prescribed in the guidelines (RP 740) of the International Air Transport Association. In addition, the arrival airport often does not yet have these smart cameras".

The first results of this test for the period August to December have been received. Using this technology eliminates the need for luggage tags, passengers only need to take a photo of the suitcase at check-in and upload it. This technique is more environmentally friendly, more accurate and cheaper than checking in by scanning baggage labels.

Marlon van der Meer, founder of BagsID, is pleased with the collaboration with Eindhoven Airport and Vanderlande: “The airport and Vanderlande have given us the opportunity to implement, test and improve our technology. Our algorithm has performed well beyond expectations. In 2021 we will further develop the application possibilities of this image recognition technology at Eindhoven Airport. ”
